01. Hi Onne! How are you and what’s up?

At the moment I am working 24/7 on preparing my performance for Qlimax 2009. This takes up pretty much all my time.Besides producing a lot of music I am busy with a new project which will be announced soon. Besides music I sometimes play some sports, games and I watch movies. I used to work in the internet industry but after 5 years of being a project / product manager, I decided to focus only on music. Last month I quit my job to get to the next level in my music career.

02. You are signed with Scantraxx for over five years and are responsible for tons of hardstyle floor fillers. When will that A-lusion album finally see the light?

”I’m already a member of Scantraxx for five years now yes. I was one of the first in the current setting. From the start I produced tracks like Talk iz Tomorrow, Drummer Beat, Perfect it, Music in You, Veritas and Between Worlds which all did really well. A lot of people always ask me about when I will do an album. Well, is that a normal thing to do? Why do I need to do an album? For me releasing an album is one of the things you can do to promote your music. There are many other ways to do that.

But of course I don’t say no to producing an album. If I will do an album in the future, I first want to improve and perfect my sound. So I want to find the right sound which I like best first, before I will do an album. When I do an album, I want to be able to look back to it after a couple of years and still be satisfied with the result. But it’s definitely one of the things on my future to do list. Especially now that I have a couple more days a week to produce music, since I quite my other job.

03. During the last edition of X-Qlusive you performed together with Luna. How did you experience this orange colored event?

This event was absolutely amazing. All the extra attention to the show and theme from the dj’s, organization and of course the party people made it a huge success. Everybody did a great job dressing up and finding the right outfit. That really made this event unique. I think the dj’s also showed that they really enjoyed this by taking part in the event like they did. It was a party to never forget! Just look at the video’s and photos.. Simply amazing! I can only hope that a party like this ever takes place again, so let’s hope that a sequel will follow with the same atmosphere and pleasure.

04 Your collaboration with Luna was something special. How did you accomplish this coop and can we expect a release of you two in the near future?

A lot of people find our set and collaboration remarkable and didn’t know what to expect. A lot of people had questions like “how can these styles blend”. Well to me that’s pretty simple. Luna and me are both dj’s who can practically play any type of hardstyle. So we can play at the beginning of the party with some softer / early hardstyle. But we can also finish a party with some of the hardest hardstyle. We are not bound to one style, like some producers and dj’s are. In this way we could easily adapt our music to one set. It’s great to see people loved what we did. Especially for this event we produced a new track called “We are back”. It has a bit of an early hardstyle feeling in the arrangement, sounds and kickbass. We simply love how that worked out. The climax part is really really hard and more 2009.alusion

Unfortunately the best part of the track wasn’t played since we had to stop our performance and we couldn’t finish the track. Just come to one of Luna’s or my performances and you will probably hear the whole track! We are talking about producing a second track, so who knows we might actually release it. To all the people who think my hardstyle sound is a bit soft, this shows that I can produce something really hard as well. But of course I did that before with Freeek it UP, We are One and Skwert.

05. Saturday November 21st you will play at Qlimax 2009 in Gelredome. Where were you when you received that news and what was your reaction?

I was at an appointment with the bank.

When I answered the phone call and got the news, we finished the meeting really quick so I could scream it out (quietly of course). It gave me a feeling which is really difficult to describe. The kind of feeling you only experience a couple of times in your life I think. Pure happiness! But the day after I already felt the pressure on my shoulders because you realize that you have to perform for 25.000 people. But this won’t be a problem of course. It’s more like a big challenge, so I can’t wait for the 21st of November.

06. What can the visitors expect and what do you expect yourself from this happening? How do you prepare yourself for instance?

The theme really suites me and my music. In my opinion my music often has some kind of magical twist / theme to it. Qlimax is the perfect event with the perfect theme to create music for. The Balanced Nature theme is something I have a lot of idea’s for. That’s why I am producing some new tracks especially for the event. Besides the new own tracks I am working on some collaborations which I might play. Furthermore I will probably play some edits of previously released tracks which a lot of people know, because the visitors also need to have some recognition of course. I expect it to be an even better event than the Qlimax events before. Every year the technology and music is improving. Qlimax is the party for everyone to show what they’ve got. I hope to finish my preparations a couple of days in advance, so I can relax a bit before the event. But I doubt it, hehe. I’ll probably be perfecting everything until the day of the event!

07. How are things going at Scantraxx? Are there any new (music) facts to mention?

I think the label is doing really well. There have been many good releases and parties recently. Recently the label joined the YouTube partner program. This is of course great since this shows how many people like the releases and videos on the YouTube channel. But of course there is much more to come. Just keep your eyes and ears open.

alusion208. Some tracks aren’t being released. In 2008 The Prophet compiled Scantraxx Unreleased, in order to make these unreleased tracks available for the fans. When can we expect a second Unreleased cd and which of your own tracks would you like to see in the tracklist?

I don’t know, you’d have to ask The Prophet? For me the only two tracks which could be compiled at the moment are the “Veritas Hard edit” and the “Voodoo Hard edit”. This second track was in my liveact on Bassleader 2009 earlier this year. So I can only say, just wait and see. Oh and now that I think of it. Maybe the track Brennan Heart and I produced 2 years ago, Don’t Speak, would be something for the cd as well.

09. At this year’s edition of Q-BASE we saw some of your hardstyle colleagues perform in different areas and styles, like Headhunterz playing house together with DJ Chuckie for instance. How do you personally feel about this development and how do you feel about this as an artist?

Oh I think it’s cool that, when hardstyle djs like other genres, they also produce and play that particular genre. But of course it would not be smart to do that under the same hardstyle alias.
I think a lot of djs and producers like various styles of electronic dance music. At least I do. I like all kinds of electronic dance music and I definitely will produce some trance, house and techno in the future. But of course with a complete different name as “A-lusion”. In my personal life I listen to a lot of other music. I actually never listen to hardstyle when I’m in my car or while I’m doing my administration.

10. People in the scene know you for your love for the early sound. Does that sound still play a keyrole in your productions and if so, in what way?

When I first went to Qlimax 2001 as a visitor, I got hooked to the sound. At that moment I changed my own style from trance to hardtrance / hardstyle. In 2003 my first hardstyle tracks were released. Because I was already active in that period, I know how to do a track like that. There’s a complete different arrangement to it, different sounds and elements. Now and then I use some influences from that period in my current music. That’s why my tracks are always a bit different from other producers I think. I played a lot of early hardstyle during the years. When I play a bit early on the evening, I sometimes still play an older track. On the Scantraxx SWAT 2007-2008 tour I played a lot of early hardstyle as the resident of the tour.

11. Hardstyle is becoming an export product. Do you notice this as well and how does this influence and inspire you?

Yes of course I see Hardstyle growing bigger and bigger in the world. I see this because I am playing more and more in other countries. I think this is great. I simply love the crowd in other countries. There are all so enthusiastic. It’s great to not only give energy to the party people, but also to get it back! Great thing about hardstyle being an export product like it is now, is that the sound is still rather new in other countries. This opens up doors for creativity and change. Most young hardstyle lovers in Holland mainly like the pitched kicks, while in the UK they mainly like the reversed bass being steady. When I am in the studio I always keep in mind if I want to do a production for the Dutch or foreign market. So I’m definitely aware of the hardstyle sound conquering the world and I try to use this knowledge in my advantage.

12. A-lusion and the future: where do you see yourself in ten years? And where will Scantraxx be by that time?

I used to ask this question in job interviews when I was recruiting new employees for my former profession. So it’s funny that you ask this question to me know, since I know it’s such a confronting question. I want to keep making the A-lusion brand bigger and bigger. I don’t care how fast this goes, as long as I enjoy what I do and I keep on improving. So my goal is to keep dj’ing and producing for years. Probably with some more aliases in various styles, but we’ll see how that goes.

As for the label, I hope it will be even bigger as it is now of course. But I think all the ingredients are there to make that happen.
